The owner Ernesto Monte comes from a long line of butchers - his grandparents owned a butcher shop in Italy and his parents owned Monte's Fine Foods on the Danforth for over 50 years. This is his second venture after opening Meat on the Beach in the Beaches in 1996.
The Monte family's roots in the meat business go back to the region of Calabria, Italy. Ernie's grandfather Giuseppe worked as a butcher. His son Antonio (Ernie's father) learned to be a butcher as well by working in his father's butcher shop. Antonio immigrated to Canada in 1956 and made a new life for himself. He bought a truck and turned it into a mobile store by selling green beans and other vegetables out of the back. In 1961, he and his wife Eva put together enough money to open Monte's Fine Foods on the Danforth .
Like most family owned businesses, Monte's was a true family affair. Ernie learned everything about the meat and food business by working in his father's store from a very young age. He stocked groceries, cleaned around the store, and practiced his cutting skills on meat bones.
Ernie decided to be a different kind of butcher. He wanted to fulfill the needs of his customers by giving them healthier options. The Royal York Meat Market sells free range chicken, antibiotic-free meats and other healthy food products. Ernie is there every day, still doing what he loves and what the Monte family has been doing for generations.
Since opening in December of 2016 Royal York Meat Market has put the community first and has won the Etobicoke Guardians Diamond Award for Best Butcher and Gold Award for Best New Business.
